Why destination weddings need a longer timeline
Guests have to book flights, arrange time off and sometimes get a visa. Hotels in popular places fill a year ahead in high season. Working back from the wedding date keeps the guest side of planning on track. For the full checklist, read our destination wedding planning timeline, and see when to send save-the-dates and how to set up a room block.
Questions
How far in advance should you plan a destination wedding?
Twelve to eighteen months is ideal. Book the venue first, then send save-the-dates about 10 months before so guests can plan flights and time off.
When should the RSVP deadline be for a destination wedding?
About 8 weeks before the wedding, and always before the hotel room block cut-off date, so late guests still get the group rate.
When do you send invitations for a destination wedding?
Three to four months before the wedding, earlier than the usual six to eight weeks, because guests need time to arrange travel.
