Getting there and around

Arriving: Rome Fiumicino (FCO) is 45 minutes by car or 32 minutes on the Leonardo Express train to Termini.

  • The historic center is walkable. Most sights are 15 to 30 minutes apart on foot.
  • Use official white taxis or the FreeNow and itTaxi apps. Uber only offers pricier cars.
  • The metro is useful for the Vatican, Colosseum and Termini, but does not reach Trastevere.
  • Rental cars are a bad idea: much of the center is a ZTL zone with automatic fines.
  • Watch for pickpockets on buses and in crowded spots.

Booking rooms for your wedding group

  • Most guests come in high season (April to June, September to October). Set up a room block or share hotel picks 9 to 12 months ahead, because good rooms go first.
  • Keep guests in one or two areas if you can. Shared shuttles and meeting points get much easier.
  • You can get around here without a car, so a central base near restaurants works well for most guests.
  • Ask hotels for a group rate with no attrition penalty, a cut-off date about 30 to 60 days before the wedding, and free delivery of welcome bags.
